Clear For Landing
...the North Fork Airport, a 160-acre parcel southwest of Paonia, co-owned by Delta County and the Town of Paonia and run by airport veteran, Mike Clawson.
Revered by pilots for competitive fuel costs and friendly service, the North Fork Airport is home to more than 20 airplanes and plenty of room to park in hangars or tie-downs. The runway is in excellent condition and services offered on-site include airport management, aviation fuel (available ‘round the clock if you pump it yourself), aircraft parking, courtesy transportation – bicycle or car – on a first-come, first-served basis, a pilots lounge/snooze room, internet access, restrooms and onsite camping. And that’s just at the airport.
Grab a bike or the courtesy car and head into town to enjoy a bite to eat or do a little shopping. And if your schedule allows, stay a few days at a host of inns, B&B’s or hotels. Catch a show at the Blue Sage or Paradise Theatre or head to nearby Hotchkiss and check out the latest display at the Creamery Arts Center, try a yoga class, visit any of a number of local farms, pick your own produce or – if you time it just right – enjoy a farm-to-table dinner or a pasta feast hosted by the Kids’ Pasta Project. Both feature fresh, locally grown foods. But if entertainment is what your interested in swing by Revolution Brewing for open mic night (to wow the locals with your big debut or just to listen), love some baby animals at the Living Farm or catch one of many fantastic events like the Sheep Camp Dog Trials on Mother’s Day weekend in Hotchkiss, Pioneer Days in Crawford, or Cherry Days on July 4th weekend and the Mountain Harvest Festival in Paonia.
And don’t forget the vino! No stopover in the North Fork is complete without a bottle or two (or okay, a case) of the Valley’s finest barreled bounty. The local vineyards offer tastings, workshops, galleries, pairings and more. Stay at the Leroux Creek Inn and Vineyards for a culinary vacation; check out Azura Cellars and Gallery or join the tour in August for the Annual West Elks Wine Tour when they’ll be pairing the best of Colorado Wine with the best of Colorado cuisine.
