Elemental Rising...A Paonia Fashion Statement
The art installation by Ryan Strand, representing the four elements, greeted guests upon entering the Paradise Theater in downtown Paonia. Strand created the elemental art pieces by twisting branches and twigs of willows and fruit tree castoffs into a cloud with rain, tornado, and fire. The fashionista’s used repurposed, up-cycled, consciously sourced materials. Some highlights this year included the headpieces by Amy DeLuca’s Head Trip. The colorful Peacock was an audience favorite and Robin Paz of Foxy Moron produced a show stopping up-cycled punk wedding that was a cross between the Rocky Horror Picture Show and the Circus that comes to town. New this year was a live art piece that involved fifteen foot canvases with blues dancers swaying on them while artist, Maya Arthur, created spectacular pieces which were then suspended from the ceiling. These are just a few of the many talented local creatives involved.
Originally the Paonia Fashion Show was called the District 81428 Fashion Show which was created by local theatre owner, Regna Jones. When Jones moved to the Roaring Fork Valley the show was non-existent for a few years. Thanks to the magic that IS Paonia, the Unicorn Arts Collective, a self described group which “was created to make magic happen” decided that it was time to revamp and revitalize it. Bookout who had been involved in the District 81428 shows was a perfect fit along with Bailey, a graduate of art school. Their vision was to have a production that would include collaborations with not just fashion designers but many North Fork Valley creatives. They envision a future that includes additional Fashion Shows, in collaboration with Colorado Creative Districts throughout the state.
If you think things are quiet in Paonia in April, GUESS AGAIN! Book your B&B and Inn reservations now because The Paonia Fashion Show will be back again the first weekend in April of 2016 and, as always, the tickets sell out early.
