SPACE & TIME TO CREATE: NUTURING ARTISTS AT ELSEWHERE
It is one of only six Artist in Residency programs in Colorado and is extremely unique in mission, demographic and location. Part of Elsewhere’s mission is to nurture the whole artist and the North Fork Valley is the perfect place to accomplish that mission. The remote location, beauty and emphasis on creative industries provide a haven for artists to remove themselves from distraction and dive fully into their work. Artists, writers and musicians of all styles and experience are drawn to Elsewhere. Most applicants find Elsewhere through reference of previous residents, showing the experiences the residents have while in Paonia ripple to arts communities worldwide. The most frequent type of residents are Millennials between undergraduate and graduate schools. Often theses residents are developing their body of work to move forward in their careers as creators. In addition to the younger demographic, Elsewhere nurtures parent artists, mid-career creators, foreign artists and anyone else who applies and meets the criteria for residency. On average 3 residents a year relocate to Paonia to immerse themselves in the lifestyle and economy, further developing the North Fork Valley’s growing arts industry.
The North Fork Valley community is one of the greatest benefits in the choice of Elsewhere as a residency program. The residency has been described as a partner dance with the community. An intimate connection is often established and growth of the individual and community happen together. At least once a month Elsewhere opens it’s doors for open studio tours and artist talks. This is a tremendous opportunity for locals to view the works of extremely talented world class artists that were inspired by the North Fork Valley. To further facilitate a deeper union of artists to the community, Elsewhere has a Resident Liaison Program which connects locals to visiting artists. North Fork Valley residents can become a liaison to Elsewhere residents and take them on adventures, share knowledge and show the artist the treasures only the locals know. It is an extremely fun and fulfilling way for North Fork Valley residents to participate in Elsewhere’s unique offerings.
Elsewhere Studios is also home to the Paonia CommUnity Garden. A small plot, once a gravel parking lot, was developed into a thriving garden by community members in 2013. The garden, which lives behind Elsewhere, is a Permaculture and Biodynamic based teaching garden for agricultural experts of the North Fork Valley to share their craft. Monthly workshops and weekly work parties are great ways for locals to dig in during the growing season and leave with a box of food when the garden is producing.
