Our organization has over 150 members from Paonia, Crawford, Hotchkiss, Cedaredge, Delta and beyond. Many of our members are Certified Organic, Certified Naturally Grown, Certified Grass Fed and biodynamic - our members that do not have certification are committed to growing to organic standards. Many of our members sell their produce at farmers markets and to restaurants throughout the State of Colorado.
Our mission is to promote local sustainable agriculture by supporting and educating producers and consumers. We publish an annual printed membership Directory - pick one up at several local businesses to get info on fresh local food and farm visits.
As part of our mission, we provide agricultural education to the community with workshops, classes, seminars, and presentations related to organic farming. We will be hosting 2-3 in-person (outdoor) classes per month from May-October 2021 with a few virtual events as well. We also offer free farm tours throughout the summer as part of our Know Your Farmer Series and we collaborate with Mountain Harvest Festival and Art and Ag Tour to offer farm tours as part of the weekend festivities. Check out vogaco.org for all the latest info on our classes and farm tours.
A wonderful aspect of VOGA is that we offer scholarships to our members for agricultural related workshops. We also offer Animal Welfare Grants to improve our members’ livestock living conditions - this helps our farmers and ranchers move their livestock safely into a rotational grazing system thus improving the health and vitality of the animals as well as the soil.
We also collaborate with other local non-profits to protect our watershed from irresponsible development. The North Fork Valley is a very unique growing region - with the mild winters, the high altitude, the warm summers, clean water, the interesting geology that created our soils, and our “million dollar wind” - we are well situated to grow a wide variety of produce including fruit, vegetables, flowers, hay, grain, livestock, grapes, etc. It is critical to protect this area so that we may continue to provide nutritious healthy food.
